There is a thread already on the engineers institute report on renewable energy, but the very last paragraph in that report is another reason for a national energy policy

It is very significant that the countries that are investing heavily in wind couple it to manufacturing. Ireland is only a technology taker, which weakens the case for subsidies. In addition, our wind penetration targets are well in excess of any other EU country.
Is there any one at home in the dept of energy who can add two and two

"I have made it clear for some time now that as long as fossil fuels continue to dominate local power production, Northern Ireland will suffer from the volatility of worldwide shifts in the cost of oil, gas and coal." See source above.
Its common sense really. If we have an option to stabilise energy prices into the future, such as in the SoI proposal, then we really have to investigate it thoroughly. And make changes SOON.

Its a pity our politicians have put the cart before the horse. Ryan is still blathering on about 40% of electric power from renewables by 2020 - does he know its 2009 or does he expect the current drop in demand to continue? FG have a genius who believes there is a scheme to remove carbon from coal (chairman of the Dáil energy commitee) which combined with the waves in the Atlantic will solve our energy problems. SoI have a plan which may or may not work or may work in part but its a proposal based on available technology - the sooner details are published, the sooner we can have a real discussion on what can be achieved, how long it will take and what it will cost.

    Wombat
Rome burnt while Nero fiddled, S of I do indeed have a viable cost effective plan, but the need for a national energy policy, that is properly researched may negate what now seems to be happening in Britain.

Daily Express | UK News :: Energy bills to rise by £230

Ideology alone is just not enough, it must be backed by well thought out technical solutions and have some degree of common sense attached

While jobs are lost by the thousands because of our high cost base, this is the government response

Watchdog calls new electricity price levy outrageous - National News, Frontpage - Independent.ie

Mary Coughlan tells us that the government are working to reduce costs here this is a complete untruth. Renewable energy does not have to cost more than fossil generation. But the present cosy cartel must be broken

I do not seek to take away the challenges and have been very open in my views on those challenges, but the regulator now wants you to pay for a plan that even the authors of that plan agree is incomplete, and after spending that 4 billion, nothing will have happened to change the cost structure. Does that make you happy

Oh I agree with all of it. I have been saying pretty much the same thing myself for years.

I even acknowledged that the SOI storage facilities were a good idea.

I still disagree with using an unreliable, expensive power source to fill it though.

My advice would be dump the turbines, build the reservoirs and build the nuclear plant.
