    House Taxes

So the Greens have decided that caravans will not, after all, be taxed at 200 euro p.a. (500 euro next year) but granny flats will.
And landlords will have an extra charge of 200 euro to pass on to students and tenants living on social welfare.

I don't think it will be enough to convince investors get rid of non-performing assets. We need a property tax to replace stamp duty.

Agreed. But a 1% stamp duty to cover civil service costs.

A friend owns his mother's house but she has a life interest in it. Will he have to pay 200 euro even though he can't let or sell the property?.

Why not ? A second house that will come good for your friend when the mother croaks.
€200 for a medical card is cheap.

No, we don't need a property tax. We need a Land Value Tax. Much much better idea.

He can eventually though, which should make up the costs, if you wanted to take an utterly cold blooded perspective.

we need a tax that takes in more factors other than value othewise dublin and other city people will rightly vote against it. i propose a quasi value and square footage/meterage calc maybe factoring in such things as number of en suites/conservatories/windows/walls/the existance of a roof/chimneys/ovens etc. all great potential tax earners.

now onto that carbon tax so we can literally tax people for the amount of CO2 the emit (or in common parlance "the air they breath"). i suggest everyone be fitted with a breathometer and fartometer to measure "emissions" and then be required to fill in the 16 page Annual Carbon Return to the Revenue Commissioners with carbon credits for any plants grown in the year (only Revenue Approved plants (sold exclusively by FF supporters) qualify for offset).

Landlords will not be in a position to pass on the tax because of the massive oversupply of flats. I expect to see rents plunge after this summer as reality kicks in.

By the way, that tax should be 2000 euro on rental properties.

If there has to be a tax land ir better than property as would discourage gathering of large land banks although could be said a bit late on that now. Would also discourage farmers getting alnd rezoned as they would have to pay tax as value increases. Other benfits would be more efficient use of land i urban areas. Could be called the use it or tax it strategy.
