Public service employment numbers up by 3,000 in Q1 2009!

As hundreds of thousands of private sector workers are laid off, the government continues to expand the public service, as an additional 3,000 have been employed in Jan to Mar 2009.

Isn't it a great country we have.

The numbers of people employed in the public sector increased by almost 3-thousand in the first three months of the year.
CSO figures also show that - despite the downturn - public sector wages rose by 3.4% in the year to March

If they fail to tackle public sector numbers and pay and attempt to raise taxes...there will be outrage. Cowen doesnt have the balls to take on the unions

I doubt Cowen has the balls to take on his Mrs.

After years of doing what Bertie told him to do, he has no ability to manage.

Incredible, this should be a resignation issue for the minister in change of any department that increased headcount rather than having people re-deployed from elsewhere.

Ah, for the love of God. Can they do nothing right? They can't even close the fecking door behind them.

    It is almost comical.

    What else can we tax?

The CSO figures show that average weekly earnings in the public sector, excluding the health sector, rose by 3.4 per cent in the year to March 2009 from €941.01 to €973.04. This compares to a rise of 3.2 per cent in the year to December 2008.
Looks like the unions got that pay rise after all.

@DCon, if that were true I think I'd actually give them credit for being so cynical. I don't think they have the wit to do that.
