With ff backbenchers eg charlie tallaght getting weak at the knees, cowen will need political cover from fine gael as he no longer has the clout. But will richard bruton put his country before the immediate needs of his party? I don't think it's possible to unilaterally impose a pay cut on someone in the public sector.
Tax rises in any case will take care of the high salaries.

I'm broadly in favour of the cuts rumoured so far but cutting the number of Gardai is daft. Do you think the Garda standing outside Dail Eireann will be re-assigned? What about the gardai driving ministers and ex-ministers around? Bertie's driver who is paid by the state to drive him to his talks where he earns thousands? Nope. The stations will see the cuts so you and I will suffer but the people who benefit most from them won't see any reduction. Brainless as usual.
Ministers' drivers and the cops outside public buildings should be the first to go. There is no need for those jobs to be done by qualified police officers when they could be done by a security company for half the price.
