I'm starting this spin about Smart Economy, Knowledge Economy, Green Jobs and Green New Deal really tiresome. No doubt other countries are similarly positioning themselves but I wonder is this economic policy based on hackneyed quango reports full of anodyne recommendations and platitudes rather than a serious appraisal of the endemic strengths in Irish people. For example, if people are unwilling to do Science and Maths courses in college, as they appear to be, where is this labour pool coming from? Maybe we are just better at so-called primary or seconday industries such as construction, manufacturing, agriculture and tourism. If someone is not working in a lab or venture capital start-up in 10 years time, will they be excluded from this 'smart economy'? Is the corollary that they are part of an 'unsmart economy'?

Sounds like little more than a PR excercise to me.

I expect this taskforce to spend the next year hidden in some Ivory Tower somewhere, working on a 'report' which they will present to Cowen in a year, which he will pass to one of his civil servants to read. The report will be well-received, commended and then either it will be shelved or the Dail will go on a three month Summer Recess before acting on it.

Postpone decisive action until it becomes impossibe not to act seems to be Cowen's mantra. Never do anything which might upset one FF supporter somewhere, so it's better not to do anything at all. FF come first, the country second, always.

This taskforce is no more than closing the barnyard gate after the horse has long since bolted. A completely pointless excercise, the economy has gone down in flames under Cowen.

To be succinct.
More balless bluff from Biffo.
Its only a chat, we ain't the world council.
In 2000 the Women's Institute in Britain gave Tony Blair the slow hand clap to demonstrate their contempt.
It was dignified, restrained and effective.Doesn't Bertie deserve the same scorn. No shouting, no abuse, no agression just a relentless slow clap whenever he speaks in public would be enough to end that man's presidential fantasy.

Nobody from Forfás?
Does this suggest that they are being considered for.....

I am surprised that many of these names did not tell Cowen where to go. It would be interesting to know how many people approached quietly declined the offer.

UCD Trinity Research Alliance-I thought that the projections produced by this group had already shown to be completely out of line with US experience?
Have UCD Trinity any credibility remaining or as usual are they just feathering their own nests like so many interest groups in Irish society.

This is nothing more than a delay tactic and further procrastination by FF - It avoids them having to touch public services and also gives the heads up to the Billion euro Monster that is FAS and many others that they may have to be accountable after the next election.

Nothing, I guarantee, nothing will come from this. It's BS in its purist form and the only real hope is that the Irish people are getting savvy to the FF modus operandi.

It's an offence to any smart person to suggest that what the Government is suggesting is smart

Agreed...not one proper job will be created from it.

All that will happen is more 'research' grants for Trinity and the like.

And what do ye propose instead - a taskforce made up of high ranked civil servants completely removed from business or innovation reality? As inept as i think the Government are, at least its something and maybe, just maybe, they might act on what comes from it.

we must get the fibre netwrok working to move forward - it should be seen as necessary as good roads, the lack of content is also of important - email and broadband usage is only the tip of the ieberg. Multiplay in every home should be the target
