Irish government deploys navy, Gardai in Mayo today to help Shell rape our resources

Fianna Fail and the Greens are supporting Shell with taxpayer funded navy ships and Gardai to assist them in raping our desperately needed gas resources and royalties. Irish citizens are being hurt and arrested in Mayo today to prevent them from protesting the arrival of 'The Solitaire', the world's largest pipe-laying ship whose arrival is imminently threatened. The destruction, danger and economic madeness courtesy of Fianna Fail that is about to be visited on us in respect of the Corrib Gas project will no doubt come to be seen for the evil that it is. Ray Burke, Charlie Haughey, Bertie Ahern, Noel Dempsey - take a bow. Your names will go down in history for the traitors that you are.

Government incompetance in this particular subject will only result in the re emergence of the new green provos, How much more thickheaded can they get, state power used in the wrong way, with no free debate, always results in violence.

    Regarding the rape or plunder of Irelands resources, 2 things;
1- Denis Halliday past United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator supports those defending in Rossport on RTE news
2 - Video of THE PLUNDER

1- Denis Halliday past United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator supports those defending in Rossport on RTE news

Denis Halliday suport for Rossport on RTE

Denis Halliday was interviewed on the RTE news today about, amongst other things, his support for the protestors at Rossport. He simply outlined how he felt the Irish people were not being fully presented with all the facts and how, given the current financial crisis, that the terms of the deal should be re-examined, so that the state might get a cut of the 50 billion deal, similar to as has happened in Bolivia, Venezuala and other places. He also outlined that those protesting are not terrorists but normal people standing up for their rights.

well done Denis, well done to all struggling with those in Mayo

    Who is Denis Halliday

Denis J. Halliday was the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Iraq from September 1, 1997 until 1998.

A 34-year veteran[1] of the UN, Halliday resigned over the economic sanctions imposed on Iraq.

In 2003 Dennis Halliday was presented with the Gandhi International Peace Award in recognition of his work drawing attention to the plight of Iraqis. In 2007 he presented the same award to Media Lens whose co-founder David Edwards had interviewed[5] Halliday in May 2000 about his work in Iraq. In 2009 Denis Halliday agreed to become a Patron of the Gandhi Foundation.

One of the sad reasons why so few people are aware of the reality of whats going on in Mayo, is because Irish media is not telling the full story. Recently we saw an attempt at an "accurate" portrayel of the situation by Paul Williams on TV3 (watch doc here) which most people now see was very unfair.

Thankfully media outside of ireland is taking up the story; the dodgy government dealings, the dodgy "men in balaclava" visits (2 grand das recently attacked, 1 and his son lucky to have not been murdered) the dodgy security firm (past worker tied up in very dodgy bolivian coup attempts) and more, thats at:

Some weeks back the Guardian released a very good video about whats going on in Mayo

    video: The price of gas

Protesters in the coastal Irish village of Rossport gear up for a summer showdown with Shell, as the company prepares to bring a controversial gas pipeline ashore after a decade-long battle

It was released with a related article: Fuelling the fury

As Shell settles a major legal action over protests in Nigeria, closer to home emotions are running high over a gas pipeline near the Irish village of Rossport, sparking violent clashes and bitter recrimination.

News of this video was posted on post about Joe Higgins MEP, taking a stand in defense of Rossport.

Hopefully more and more people in Ireland will awaken as they learn the facts, with that visit rossport, participate, support and stand with those already fighting for justice.

It's pretty obvious there is very poor understanding of the deal that was done, there have been plenty of good posts on it here when you cut through the hysteria. Suffice it to say it wasn't the worst deal in the world considering the accessability and size of our natural resources.

Comparing the deal we done with Norway or Arab countries ignores the practicalities of finding and drilling successfully off our coast.

But the two sides of this argument are so far apart and so steeped in vitriol that never the two shall meet.

Let them build it, take their 25% corp tax, if you are not happy with that lobby the government for a better cut rather than wasting your time opposing the rig. Because hell or high water its going to happen.
The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money.

I may be mistaken but my understanding is that protestors aren't objecting to the rig. Isn't it the case that they merely object to the gas being processed on land rather than offshore?

I thought that was the point of the "Shell to Sea" name?

No they got their concessions about the pipeline.

Now the shell to sea party line is "shell is plundering our resources."

I'm sure if the Irish govt. got 100% of the profits they would oppose the rig on climate change grounds.
