    scrap the army

what is the point of our army? to keep the brits out? if they wanted to invade us they would as so much more powerful.

I know they do peace keeping in africa but should our tax money be spent on keeping peace in savage parts of the world - bearing in mind that Ireland doesn't have a history of colonising them so cannot be blamed.

It costs a fortune but we get nothing.

At least the Army provide some employment and international peacekeeping - Instead of scrapping the Army, could we not scrap Bertie Ahern? Despite his resignation amid corruption allegations, he's still being driven around in a Black Chariot and still retaining one of the biggest salaries, pensions and no doubt expense accounts in the developed Western World. He serves no purpose other than to remind the nation of its 'Brown Envelope' era.
My first book: inspired by Bertie Ahern.......

I'd be all for drastic cutbacks in the Army Budget... Totally irrelevant in this time...

10% of the Army are deployed overseas at any given time.
The rest are here to avoid having to call on the Brits to come in and restore order when there is an Internal Security situation.
That´s why we have an Army, and it won´t be scrapped.

The army at least serves some use & has an impact on peoples lives when on peace keeping missions abroad.
We'd be better off scrapping the Dept. of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.

Many parts of the world have cultures thousands of years old and there is nothing savage about most of the people there.

Conditions have become savage because of conflicts that have caused deaths, mutilations and economic devastation on a vast scale. Where it can, the developed countries should contribute to UN peacekeeping operations, which are the only hope of stopping or at least limiting those conflicts. Ireland enjoys a good international reputation for our contribution to these operations.

Many of the other countries that contribute generously to UN peacekeeping operations have never had third-world colonies, either - Sweden, Finland, Nepal, India, Fiji ...

Exactly. The free state army is just there to maintain the privilege of the ruling elite, and keep the landless masses in thrall. The people need to get organised and abolish the free state and its hired gun men.

The metro ran a story on Friday saying 25% of south african men admitted raping at least one woman.

Why is the government taken money out of my pocket to stop one bunch of africans killing another bunch of africans - the rest of the world should leave them at it and take responsibility for their own continent.

we cannot afford these luxuries aany more.

We need them for bomb-disposal and to break public-sector strikes if necessary like the 1980's with the rubbish-collectors, and to participate in peace-keeping missions under the aegis of the UN.
