Roll out wireless services. In fairness, a lot of the wireless providers in the major cities here are using tech designed for rural areas but are using it to get around the Eircon monopoly.

HSDPA is a cheap solution. Where there is 3G cover there is interwebs. Crappy ping times, but that's not a problem for most people.

The British government plans to impose a 50 pence monthly levy on every phone and broadband line to fund the rollout of fibre to rural areas, it was announced today.

Isn't it probable that this is just another tax that will not be used as announced?

Could the Irish government pull a similar stunt?

they didn't forget to connect them - trust me. They were fully aware of the situation. Just because they aren't connected now, doesnt mean they wont be in the future, particularly when wireless backhaul becomes more feasible.

Plus, they can connect via eircom, bt and esbt in many areas. The backhaul problem is more resilient backhaul.

This would make sense if Eircom was still a publically owned company, but it makes no sense to do this for privateers. We are seeing now, every day of the week, the great folly of privatising vital industries and communications. The bottom line is the private sector is not capable of running such industries, and will always be coming back to the state for bailouts.
