A campaign against high (commercial) rents

Rents are still far too high, and jobs are being lost as a result.

Disappearing into the night - The Irish Times - Sat, Jun 13, 2009

Given the high pressure on workers to reduce wages, what pressure can be brought against landlords to reduce rents?

Join Amhrán Nua, we're going to legislate against commercial rack renting and introduce rent controls.

One strong idea is simply to go into mass commercial suicide. Every company which is being harmed by too-high rents forms a union, and they all fold and go into liquidation.

Then you re-form the companies under different names and as a group, negotiate better rents with landlords, with more reasonable clauses.

Talk to your accountants before doing this. You're allowed wind up companies if they're no longer able to continue on due to excessive rents, but you also have heavy legal responsibilities towards people to whom your companies owe money.

You must comply with these responsibilities before winding up, to the best of your ability.

If you break the law, you may be banned from running a company in future, and you may have to pay a fine of a few hundred Euro too.
When you see the words "Mises" or "Hayek" in someone's post, just ask yourself: do I really want to ban paper money and go back to gold?

You have to pity the kind of people who buy into conspiracy theories. I find the following to be the saddest words on the internet: "Re: connection between Bilderberg puppet lady gaga and viral outbreak in ukraine "

    Stop voting FF.

Yeah, it actually is that simple.

FF believe in high property prices, land prices, and rents. Everything they do is designed to prop up or increase rents and prices.

You want to get rents down, you have to eradicate the blocking mechanism that is FF TDs and Councillors, because they'll fight it tooth and nail every step of the way, using any and all dirty tricks at their disposal to make sure it doesn't happen.

I think he can't wait until 2012 when the next chance to vote against FF is due.

Sadly without a new Government with a clear strong mandate to kick over the anthills then nothing will happen in the area of artificially-high rents.

It is a desperately important issue and it is causing otherwise-viable companies to go bust, don't get me wrong, I know this needs addressed urgently if we're to stop shooting ourselves in the head and making the recession even worse than it strictly ought to be.

Really though, in reality nothing will be done while FF are in power. I wouldn't put it past them to introduce measures in the next budget designed to raise rents! It's all they know, all they understand.

Mass commercial suicide is a romantic notion.

But the advice on winding down, should be taken on board. If your business is under pressure, now is the time to talk to the accountant. Find out what you owe and how to limit your exposure. Also if you are in trouble, deal with it now. Don`t wait for the sheriff to arrive at your door.

    Ain't that the sad truth.
