    Live Register for May.

I knew it Aprils live register was so low because of the easter holidays, RTÉ News: 8,000 redundancies in May
Thats the bigest rise this year, and to think some people were saying that unemployment was slowing down not in your life, Mays live register will break the record set in January of 36,000 if the above report is to be believed, and the live register will be out on Friday just in time before most people go to cast there votes, so long Brian cowen and Fianna Fail nice knowing ye.

I don't understand these figures in the RTE report

he biggest monthly unemployment figure this year was recorded in May with 8,042 people being made redundant.

Figures from the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment show that for the first five months of this year, redundancies are running 166% higher than in the same period last year, at 35,925.
33,000 lost their jobs in January!

Have the figures not always been released on a Wednesday, while local figures are released on the Friday?

Expect both sets of figures to be massaged.

Redundancies don't equal total job losses/additions to live register.

Like OP said, probably over 35k will be added to register for May. We get those numbers on Friday. What don't you understand?

Yeah redundancies are only one component. You also have people turning 18, students finishing education or training courses, mothers of young children re-entering the workforce, immigrants, and so on entering the labour pool each month. And people who just quit their job without being officially laid off. And even in a recession there will always be people finding work of some kind, so you subtract them from the total above.

So the relationship between redundancies and the live register is a fairly tenuous one, they'll always be two very different numbers.

The LR figure for April 09 was 384,448, an increase of 13,177 from March 09.

The key political figure for June 5th is whether or not the LR figure breaches 400k. That would require a larger month on month increase than last month.

Which is very likely considering that was the lowest figure we have had in recent months.
