Massive victory for NIMBYs in two thirds council majorities for planning

NIMBYs,the not-in-my-backyard snobs who oppose all development on hypocritical resort to environmentalism, have won a massive victory: Minister of the Environment Gormley of the Green Party is proposing that councils will have to vote a two thirds majority for rezoning areas for development. Majority rule is no longer good enough for the Greens.

If the OP knew anything about this then they would know that it is presently a 3/4ths majority of the Council (not of those present) to materially contravene a development plan. So in a 24 member council a minimum of 18 have to vote in favour of the contravention. If that is reduced to 2/3rds, then that is a reduction in the majority required, such as 16 in the example I gave.

Majority rule isn't good enough for you?

Admittedly, councils in some counties, such as south Kerry, have endorsed ribbon development on a huge scale. But Bord Pleanala and the Department of the Environment have sufficient powers to restrain council's planning abuses.

Gormley didn't mention this in the Newstalk phone interview today with George Hook. I got the impression that the two thirds was for local planning permissions, not contraventions.

I did not hear it either. Maybe it is the making of a development plan that is going from a simple majority to 2/3rds? To materially contravene an existing development plan presently requires a 3/4ths majority.
