i understand that clampers and bankers are to join the protest to add to its popular appeal..
If the banks are out for a bail,
and Lenny's efforts end up as a fail,
    when the Somer does come,
    to the Country they'll run,
And leave a Fine mess for the Gael.

Endinf the one Party (FF) state:

The way that migrant workers have been treated has lead to shocking abuse even before this has been brought in, with people in a position of indentured servants not able to leave employers no matter how exploitative they were. Probably Harney's ideal for all workers. Under the new terms, even if someone had a job after waiting around for two months, their partner and children would not be allowed to stay. These people include nurses who we begged to come over here and who've been here for years.

There are over 2,000,000 in the workforce and only 30,000 permits.

MIGRANT workers will stage a protest in Dublin today against new work permit regulations which could leave hundreds unable to retain secure jobs. This will make people even more vulnerable as they'll be destitute if they're sacked and have no chance of getting another legitimate job. Black economy, how are ye.
    ...
The Government will no longer issue permits to non-EU nationals for such roles such as domestic workers or lorry drivers.

Furthermore, there will be no new permits for what the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment described as low-paid jobs, classed at under €30,000 per annum.
Fees for renewing permits will also be increased and partners and dependants of the future permit holders will have to apply for a permit in their own right.

The Government will also remove a number of job categories from the existing roles eligible for green cards, mainly across the health and financial sectors.

Under the new rules, migrant workers on permits who are made redundant will be prohibited from taking up a new job unless it is has been publicly advertised for two months.

Fr Bobby Gilmore of the Migrant Rights Centre Ireland said:. "Forcing people into the informal economy will not create jobs for Irish workers. It will encourage exploitation and it will be a loss to revenue. Have we not learned our lesson from the Irish experience in the United States and elsewhere?"

SIPTU’s Gerry McCormack said: "Our concern is these changes will lead to greater exploitation of highly vulnerable workers, and will undermine standards for all workers in Ireland."

The protest will take place outside the office of Employment Minister Mary Coughlan at 12pm.

The Irish Trade Unions have supported the GAMA workers and seamen who were in slave conditions and I hope will come out and support this demonstration.

Good old cactus. There's only yourself and Mother Teresa in it. Instinctive revulsion at Irish people like taxi drivers and unthinking support for anyone who is not. Paper hat for Cactusflower.

And probably featuring Rosanna of "Residents against Racism" in a starring role too! Guaranteed to be standing room only, I'd say !

Anyone with a working visa for the states has a similar problem - movement between jobs is not as easy as it is for someone who has full citizenship.

Freaky isn't it. You might even start thinking that citizenship brings privileges.

I doubt if rosanna and her motley crew would be up at that hour of the day, unlike in fairness the immigrant workers who are working for less than people used to.

That's a bit unfair to Ms Flynn. She is probably manning ( or should I say personning, to be p.c. ? ) the barricades as we speak and topping up on self-righteous indignation at the very audacity of government to subject ecomomic migrants to a work permit system! I mean how they dare they!

Lads, are you gonna comment on the issue at hand (assuming ye have the knowledge and intelligence to do so) or ye just gonna slag people off in a blatant attempt to derail the thread?

Any attempt to tighten up on the work permit rules to prevent abuse and to increase the chance of jobs for Irish workers is obviously to be welcomed.
