It is not possible to say Ireland is "technically in depression - there is no technical definition.
Besides, the term has been used in the past to describe an extended period of falling or stagnant output, not simply the extent of a fall in output. Come back in another 18 months to make a more informed judgement on that.
It's about time someone called it what it is with unemployment heading for 20%.
If the government keeps spending money hand over fist it won't just be a temporary depression, it'll be a full scale lost decade (or more) like the 1980s when they also tryed to tax their way out of recession rather than cutting spending.
Do we ever learn? Take the pain and get it over with.
