    Average Industrial Wage

Is it time for a more fair way to show the wages paid in Ireland the average industrial wage is a misleading way of doing this a better way would to have a band system starting at 10k and moving upwards in 5k bands this would give a much clearer picture as to what people earn and their numbers

With the above in mind, is there actually any way of finding out how many people earn say 30k or less, 40k or less, 50k or less - is there stats in like this anywhere?

yep the CSO revenue figures show the amount of people in a range of income brackets and the % of the tax take they pay

maybe the median wage would be more effective as the massive outliers at the upper end of the scale would be discounted.

I think this is what you are looking for (2008 CSO report). Go to section 18 "Earnings"

Median, as the the chap above, is the more sensible way. Removes the rare top earners and bottom earners from the equation.

indeed, if you want the pure average, go ahead and use the mean (total income divided by population). if you want the most probable income for an irish citizen then you have to use the median.

Also, median is the point where 50% of the population earn less than that wage. More often that not, people below that level will pay very little if any income tax.
