Tax take down 24% for four months

The latest figures from the Department of Finance show that there was an Exchequer deficit of €7.3 billion for the first four months of this year. This compares with a deficit of €3.7 billion in the same period a year earlier.

Total tax receipts are down almost 24% from a year earlier at just over €10 billion. The Government said earlier this year it was expected a drop of 16% in tax revenue for the whole of 2009

Just want to ask do ye think, that if VAT was reduced would it have helped to improve the figures. just listening past Last word podcast with Brian Lenihan saying that it would have made not difference and about two months ago he say that his biggest mistake was raising the vat rate

Politicians are one trick ponies. Everyone knew raising taxes means less revenue but they can not help themselves. Idiots in the left wing parties will actually totally ignore this reality
