    Dole is too generous...

    In Todays Irish Independent:

"OUR generous social welfare system is encouraging more people to stay on the dole, a major new report warns."

I wonder how many people recently laid off would agree.

I doubt many would. However, there is a danger that people will opt to stay on the dole as wages and the quality of jobs on offer collapse.

Its kinda true CanadianCelt , but its not good to generalize . Its too generous for some , for sure . Some means testing is needed . Having said that , there are some people living in total squalor and in my opinion , the dole is a bribe in a way, to keep ghettoes from exploding . We do have good 'dole' but we have a crappy unequal society also, ie health, housing, education , etc .

well it is a lot higher than in most other countries and some people earn more on the dole than they would on minimum wage so it would act as disincentive to work.
But I think a lot of those who look at it that way would haave on the dole before the recession.

How the hell do you arrive at that conclusion?

€204.33 PW = €10625.16 PA, hardly the minimum wage level!

I would love to see those who wrote the report try and live on €204.33 PW!!

The dole is too high for people who have never worked and never wanted to work. Getting EUR 5 an hour for doing nothing is a disincentive to get a job paying minimum wage, especially if those on welfare might lose extra freebies if they get a minimum wage job.

However, EUR 200 a week is not enough for people who recently lost jobs.

But, the government are broke through years of mis-management courtesy of Bert and McCreevy.

It's common sense that the dole has to reduce, as does the minimum wage and every other wage/cost all the way to the top.

Do you have to be working 40 hours a week on minimum wage before you lose your welfare entitlement?

And I suppose you would arbitrate on that would you ?
What a very practical idea ! You could interview everyone on the dole and then make your decision eh?

If you have dependant children, you recieve more and some people get extra because of sickness.
