thats right , every second young fella who left school to become a brickie , plumber , carpenter or sparky was paid a grand a week of monopoly money

all of those tradesmen had 10 golden years so if they had any sense they have some savings so they shouldnt need to rely on 204 euro of dole money a week to get by

It's indeed tragic, if you see it from those construction workers point of view, and not only young people worked in construction. Many undertook courses in construction. And for what? They have aquired skills they can't make use of now, and during the time missed out on other skills and got older, have got a family as they were made belief their jobs are in demand and they will be needed in the future.

By the way, the fact that social welfare was increased in last years autum budget shows how well the government was aware of the economic situation then.

And those who are complaining about rate of social welfare: calm down. It will come down anyway.

thats another strawman that you heard at union camp earlier on in the year where begg and o connor briefed you on what to say when confronted with the issue of being among the highest paid public servants in europe

    WE DIDNT CAUSE THIS MESS
THE PRIVATE SECTOR CREAMED IT DURING THE BOOM

young brickies and sparkys were too busy making arrangements with thier local garrage for some new alloys to be thinking of what some surplus to requirement ass scratching pen pusher in the local dept office was up to

I do not blame the builders or the developers for what has happened. Like everyone else they can only do what the law of the land permits. It is the people that make the law of the land that should have done more.
The government is supposed to stand back objectively and impassionedly and do what is in the long-term interest of the country. The problem is that sometimes what is beneficial in the long-term for the country is not beneficial for the government come election time. There in lies a problem major problem with democracy.

    Hi powderfinger.

Actually I don't think I'm too far away from the truth - indeed I may be spot on! For you see I remember the 80s and the 70s before them, and the attitudes to the unemployed and the poor of those times. If you had your hair neatly cut and combed you became an object of suspicion, if your shoes were shined was another reason. Shopping in Superquinn [honest!] instead of Dunnes Stores would result in 'talk' - and maybe anonymous tip-offs to the 80s equivalent of Ms Prissy!

In those times Ms Prissy was actually able to send her agents to a claimants home - that is a claimant who had run out of stamps and was now applying for Unemployment Assistance - these agents were able to count how many under-vests you had, pairs of socks, food in store etc., they could peruse your ESB bill and note the electrical equipment in the home, peruse milk and bread bills [we had bread van deliveries then], they could check how many bars of soap you had and what type of toilet rolls you were using!! And this agent's report would determine the rate of Unemployment Assistance a claimant would receive.

I must say that not everyone received this 'close attention' only those who were 'signing-on' in shiny shoes, pressed trousers, had a colour TV or a car or a bicycle, and had neatly combed hair.

I don't think I'll be sending my CV onto Prissy's Stasi
I watched with glee, while your kings and queens, fought for ten decades for the gods they made.

Most of those jobs are gone because our property slowdown happened at the same time as the international credit crisis, are you saying it was a mistake to create jobs in the first place??
