BRIAN LENIHAN’S latest attempt to pacify the public finances found a measure of praise yesterday from the most unlikely of sources, the editorial column of the Daily Telegraph.

MINISTER FOR Finance Brian Lenihan has said the recent budgetary steps taken in imposing the pensions levy and raising taxes had impressed and “amazed” other European countries.

Speaking at the Irish League of Credit Unions conference in Killarney on Saturday, Mr Lenihan said other European governments would not have been able to impose the kind of pain the Government had.

We like to think we're a rebellious and healthily disrespectful people. We're not. We're one of the most docile, easily conned, pliable people in the entire world. We'll buy any old sh1te from any old conman, so long as we are either being patronised like children or else we think there's a short-term buck in it for us. We are mostly the heirs of those who hid under their beds or openly collaborated with the British, not the tiny minority who actually fought them. We're the heirs of people who held on and dug in when it was more important to protect your family than get your head taken off by a bunch of murderous inbreeds who placed more value on their horse than on human life, just like every people that has ever suffered under those conditions for any length of time. And lest we forget, there is no Union Jack flying over most of the country right now, and the people that made that happen are our heritage.
