Ireland to begin recovery in 2011 - says Garrett - while blaming McGreevy

Article in todays Sunday Independent.

Speaking to the Sunday Independent he said: "This government has done huge damage in terms of our competitiveness, our costs are up to 30 per cent higher than our neighbours'. The damage done by Charlie McCreevy when he was in Finance was appalling."
Recovery to 'begin in 2011' says Garret - National News, Frontpage - Independent.ie

I wonder in 20 years time if Bertie Ahern or Brian Cowen were to give analysis of our economy would they be trused as much as one of the leading fathers of Irish Politics.

Spin that story as much as you want - There was no political motivation behind AIB's decision.

I'm spinning nothing. I've no time for McCreevy either. A few months ago Garret was blaming the IRA for our financial woes. He's a bletherer like the retired judge on the fast show.

I remember St. Garret promising the sun, moon and the stars to the north inner-city of Dublin and then reneging in a blink. He lied. Maybe he was busy getting another loan or fawning to Britain. He was as corrupt as the rest of them and far more so than Bertie.

While I like Garret and you've got to admire his longevity and he obviously has valid opinions on the running of government, there is a vein of hypocrisy running through his comments on the failure of others charged with running our economy.
Any p.ie analysis of his dealings with the economy will run into the usual partisan quagmire and as someone else above has pointed out his own personal finances were far from transparent (a point I’m sure is the source of much embarrassment and regret for him)

I think this Budget presents tough balancing act for Government - The Irish Times - Sat, Apr 04, 2009 is a more interesting article from Garret, giving an insight into his own financial thinking while in government and how he sought the external advice of Henry Kissinger to give him the ammunition to defy the Dept. of Finance and Alan Dukes by not taking the more stringent medicine they had in mind. Obviously, as Garret doesn't mention it, this had nothing to do with keeping the Labour party on-side in his coalition or hanging Dukes out to dry.

just remembered Garrett was, and I guess is regarded as a wooly headed intellectual.

Correct me if I am wrong but was he not known as the least well off Taoiseach ever.

I know somebody who has made that link before.

I have a huge amount of respect for Garret, I've met him a number of times though my old job and he was a smashing political mind, but I think it's time he's left alone now.
A poster of some consequence...
