12 years too late but I suppose it is to be welcomed, regardless of who announces it. Unfettered, uncontrolled, unbudgeted and unrestricted immigration was, let's face it, a decidedly stupid thing to allow happen.

It only affects Non EU immigration lads. Calm down. It was never as huge as people imagine and generally applied only to jobs where we had a shortage. Now if they tightened up the Non EU student visas that would be something good.

    From the Irishtimes

Tougher criteria for work permits - The Irish Times - Wed, Apr 15, 2009

I dont think its fair to hit people who are already here and have made their homes here. Why did FF not come up with a proper policy on this over the last 12 years?

This is yet another FF smokescreen, they are putting Irish against Non Irish, public vs private. Divide and conquer.

Unfettered, uncontrolled, unbudgeted anything is always stupid Pauli.

Unfortunately we in Ireland seem to have an incredible loathing of ever trying to plan things.

What in god's name is it in our psyche that we day dream our way through everything hoping it will all be grand.

That is so, although back in 2003 (or so) Mary Harney as Minister for Industry responded to predictions of large-scale EU immigration by declaring that Ireland could rescind our invitation to 75 million East Europeans by applying for a derogation after the event, so to speak. But of course that was never on.

Indeed. Our policy over the last 12 years was not to have a policy. I am not anti-immigration. I just want to see a system in place based on a sound legal basis and for the law to be enforced. It is not too much to ask.

There is NO planning in Ireland. Which is why everything goes hopelessly arseways.

If somebody who already has a work permit is not granted a new one, can they get back a large % of the tax they paid while they worked here? Fair is fair..

This is a welcome move. We cannot ignore the thousands of school leavers who will be coming on to the jobs market this year. They can perhaps be expected to start their careers at a low wage, but not because they can live 15 to a house because they plan on going "home" one day.
