    This Nationalization is not Socialism

We shouldnt think that the current round of nationalizations are a step towards Socialism. The great difference between Socialism and what's happening now is that in Socialism these vital resources are taken into permanent public ownership for the constant benefit of the whole people. What Fianna fail are doing now is a temporary measure - at the great expense of the people - for the benefit of a few oligarchs, so that these oligarchs may turn around in the future and crush the people once again with vastly inflated land and house prices.

What actaully is a step towards Socialism is the fact that the nationalization of vital resources - such as land and banks - can no longer be presented as an illogical outrage by the apologists for capitalism. The very fact that the capitalist regime has had, itself, to resort to vast nationalizations for its own very survival shows clearly to all honest observers the feasibility and the urgency of truely Socialist nationalizations for the benefit, and not the robbing, of the people.

"Nationalisation"? - all they have done is save the bacon of the rich. Why don't they nationalise the banks and have done with it? - then funds could be lent to get the economy going.

Nassim Nicholas Taleb said that what we are seeing is not the state taking over the banks but the banks taking over the state.

Hes right but too late, I'm afraid, that happened a while ago. I don't recall voting for any bankers, and yet here are my taxes going towards their bonuses.

Bord Gais and ESB are two of the only sound companies in the country.
