Bed and Breakfast & Hotels - recession

Is it any wonder its in such a bad way with the prices they charge.

Myself, the missus and two young kids look to go away a few times a year just for one or two days and the price always seems to go through the roof. Cheapest is normally about €35 per person and thats including the kids. So for two nights it will cost €280 and thats a weekday price. Hotels (the cheap ones) will start off around the same price excluding breakfast. Went up north last month for €65 per night for all and that was the first place I called

Norn Iron is much cheaper for everything that's labour intensive (that includes hotels / B&B) as the minimum wage is much lower (and that knocks on to what is considered lower paid, middle paid etc). A more extreme example of the same effect is if you go to Goa for your holidays, everything will seem mad cheap, but no local could afford to stay in the hotel.

So we could reduce hotel prices here if we reduced the minimum wage. Unfortunately, it would have a knock on effect in reducing all wages in the economy, thereby making the reduced prices appear no lower than the old ones did.

Yes but aren't most B&B family run with low running costs, a lot of hotels are empty and little or no trade. Would have thought they could put a bit of effort into putting "bums the seats" by lowering their prices. We could with some form of lastminute.com for B&B's and hotels.

But a lot of hotels do. There are good deals out there if you look. It's much better than it was only a year ago.
Dan Sullivan. I was back but we still couldn't all have a vote.
