Almost 400,000 unemployed...so the EU has been of very little benefit to us at the end of day.

The problem was, we became highly dependent on EU cash down through the years and when that dries up we see we actually dont have an economy that isnt dependent on foreign investment in this country. We have never fully developed or supported a domestic export industry like the French, Germans, Finnish, Swedes, Dutch, etc. have. Where is our Nokia, our Saab, our car companies, producing exports? We have none, all we had is money coming from the EU.

You can blame it on our idiotic politicians, predominately Fianna Fail politicians who were in office for most of the time and had no interest in developing industry in this country other than semi state monopolies run by cronies.

We have reaped what we sowed.

I have a feeling when we are at 600 or 700,000 unemployed you will still have people saying ah but only for we are in the EU imagine how bad we would be.

The problem is we joined the EU to get access to easy money from them. Instead of going it alone and doing like the Swiss, Swedes and Finns, building a very strong domestic economy and very strong domestic industry producing lots of high quality exports like Nokia and Ericsson. That's why we are where we are, when the EU money dries up, we find the rug pulled out from under us and still not having strong indiginous industry.

But our politicians are more interested in shouting at each other in the Seanad and Dail than trying to build the Irish Nokia or Ericsson. Our political class have failed us.

I'd say the closest you've ever been to Lagos is Benidorm.

I would fully back this. If you never put anything in taxes then you should have a max of €75 per week. I have started a new trial to live on this amount as I want to increase my savings. Its actually quite easy to do this. Obviously doesn't include rent so I pay that, however, food and leisure money this is plenty for me. I dont see why people who have put very little or nothing into the system should get as much as someone who has paid a 100K taxes for example from their jobs in the past.

    Where's the IOM?

Foreign nationals at the capuchins? Now it doesn't have to be that way does it? The International Organisation for Migration (office at 7,Hill St, Dublin 1) is PAID by the Irish Government to repatriate impecunious foreign nationals who find themselves in 'this vale of tears'.Welcome to IOM Dublin

If the IOM just set up a stall near the capuchins' lengthening queue; a bit of outreach, a bit of businesslike initiative, it's not too much to ask of a publicly funded body; and the woman from Rialto wouldn't have to kill time in the queue by the desperate measure of talking to journalists.
