Non Nationals and Social Welfare.

The goverment yesterday cut the dole by 100 euro for anyone under 20, these are Irish citizens and they have been cut on there dole, yet we have 70,000 non nationals in this country getting social welfare, most of these have never paid any tax as they worked for min wage, most have no intention of going home if they cant get work here, its unbelievable to cut the dole for people under 20 who are Irish citizens yet they wont cut the dole for non nationlas so in essence non nationals are treated better than Irish citizens, unbelievable is all i can say, people are really getting pissed off about this as can be seen on Liveline a few minutes ago where peole were talking about this.

I would imagine that some under 20's are non-nationals. This isn't an issue of nationality, it's one of age.

I can never understand this argument against people for not paying tax because they were earning the minimum wage (incidentally, I believe within the Six Occupied Counties the minimum wage is taxable).

Surely it is the fault of the criminal employers for paying them such pathetic rates, rather than the worker for being paid so little.

Ridiculous. Not to mention citing liveline to support the argument. They were also wrong. We're not the only nation in the whole wide world that gives social welfare to immigrants.

Pedantic I know, but over here the All wage is taxable.. it's just our Tax credit system effectively takes those on the minimum out..
but, a working married couple, one on 50k, the other on minimum wage..
All Tax credits should go to the 50K spuse, as it will reduce the 41% burden.. that means the minimum wage spouse will be taxed.

Look i have no problem paying non nationals the dole for a limited amount of time, there needs to be a limit of 6 months(which is very generous), because what is happening at the moment is that most non nationals have no intention of going home as they get more here on the dole that they would if they went home and got work which they might be unable to do, if i went to a Aus or Canada as a immigrant do you think i would get the dole if i could not find work? no i would not and even if i was able too i would not feel right about taking it and if i could not get a job within 3 months i would return home.

I work on an office floor where at least 25% of the people are non-national. Mostly english, German, Indian with the odd Ex-soviet bloc thrown in.. 2 yanks.

Whats remarkable is how much they get done considering they are only here for the €205 a week dole

Do you believe that the average non-national (the vast majority of whom are EU citizens) came here to:

(a) live out their lives idly on the dole

or

(b) to work and earn a decent living

?
