    Shop Local....ehhhh no thanks

In times of fiscal prudance I have noticed that all the basic essential shopping items (food) supplied by local shops ie: Centra/Gala Etc have not reduced prices at all, in fact I think they are going up. The local quack and dentist still charges the same money I had to pay in the so-called boom years on the celtic tiger. Yes we all like to support local, and yes they are controlled by the major distributors, but surly its time all prices were seen to reduce by 15-20% at least in line with the new budget..

We are still paying high prices locally, and yes Tesco's and Dunnes to have offers, but is it time the local shop-doctor-dentist-accountant gets a reality check...!!

    Here Here.

The cost of living is going up not down.

I am doing my patriotic duty and putting my family first and shopping in the North.

My weekly shop in Dunnes. ROI €280 per week.

My weekly shop in Sainsburys NI £ 120 per week.

    No competition!

We have started shopping up the north this year, and we have found the price difference has been absolutely astounding. One woman on the till next to us had 25 bottles of smirnoff and countless whiskey bottles, saving hundreds of Euros.

One of the laughable things in the budget was no increase in the VAT rate to help stop the cross border shopping. They could remove VAT alltogether and the prices in the north would still be value for money.

The Dundalk Chamber of Commerce did a shop in Dunnes Stores in Dundalk and then did EXACTLY the same shop in Dunnes Stores in the North ..... ~€140 in Dundalk and ~€80 in the North. This was a basket of everyday items, no alcohol etc. (This was reported on LMFM a couple of months ago.)

    No comparison in the prices.

Ah but ''The Difference is, they're Irish.....''

    WTF does that mean?

Dunnes Stores can go f**k themselves with this crap - as the saying goes, the last refuge of the scoundrel is patriotism.

People care about themselves, this has been helped along nicely by those in power who have shown that caring only for yourself is the only way to go.

I live in border area and believe me people are being conned by Sainsburys if you compare with Aldi or Lidl, they have put their prices up considerably since xmas and have increased vegs etc and other items that people just put in their trolley and dont compare. Their wine is actually €1 dearer than lidl and the same with their noodles, vegs etc. People are very easily lead sometimes so do compare with border shops in the south.. I wouldnt go to Dunnes in the south, however I buy most things from Aldi or Lidl and on occasion might buy liquor only when I was having a large gathering. However would not make a special trip, I do see a lot of people making the trip doesnt always make sense.

One of the main things I cant understand about this budget is why they left the VAT unchanged.I think the increase in VAT last October has cost us 700 million in lost revenue so what would be the reason not to reduce it surely it should be about 10%.

When I go north I spend big and would advise anyone else going to do the same. Stock up big time on tinned food, washing powders, cleaning sprays, toiletries, booze srl... Make it worth your while.

I do agree with you on that, it was such a stupid mistake to make, of course Newry etc is going to be packed this weekend..Buying Cigs, etc. If he wanted to hold onto local spending it was a major mistake, seeing the strength of the sterling
