Dawn meat redundancies are displacement of Irish workers: Sherlock

Labour TD Sean Sherlock is quoted in the Examiner saying that the 185 Dawn Meats redundancies in Midleton announced last week are in fact the displacement of Irish workers by foreign, mainly Brazilian, agency workers. He also alleges that there is 'definite displacement' taking place among the larger meat processors pointing to how Irish workers are not being hired by processors even though they are continually employing foreign workers.

maybe it has something to do with better work output from the foreign workers ... Many Irish factory workers are a lazy shower of good for nothings supported in their endeavours by SIPTU

Labour need to recognise that the logical consequence of this kind of phenomenon - should they wish to prevent it - is the need for a more restrictive policy on immigration. When Pat Rabbitte appeared to recognise this in 2006, he got scant public-support from within the party.

How about Labour adopting a policy of a decent days work for a decent days pay..? foreign workers are much more prepared to put in a decent effort for the pay packet

How about a mass picket by all redundant, laid off and unemployed Irish workers in the area on Dawn Meats? And a complete boycott of Dawn Meat products by all Irish workers? And the total ostracising of the scab foreign labour? It will soon come to that and I for one will be delighted to see the civil unrest. The PC brigade wont know what hit them when the full extent of this depression takes hold.

"The company wants to close the main boning hall and associated facilities. The job losses associated with this will encompass general operatives, skilled operatives, boners, fitters, electricians, packers and even IT and secretarial staff."
Where are these foreign displacers going to work if those things are being closed down? Surely those places must remain open if displacement is happening?

He said he had recently been contacted by a boner in the meat industry who could not get work, even though employers were hiring foreign workers.

Mr Sherlock pointed towards some of the bigger meat processors as culprits, and said although the evidence was anecdotal, there was a "definite displacement" of Irish workers.

So we have anecdotal evidence and a "biggest fear" that "many might be foreign"?

Thats good enough evidence for the labour party.

In other words more scare tactics.

In a situation where unemployment is growing I see no sense in continuing to issue work permits. Jobs should only be given to people from outside the EU if it can be proven that no Irish worker will take them.
As a side issue however bringing them here to give a bad impression isnt' the right thing. They wont like it but will still understand if thir visa application is denied or cancelled due to the quota of available jobs being filled but while they do have the permit and are here they should be treated with equality. Creating a Xenophobic advertisement of Irish culture would not be good for Irish business and friendly relations either internally or abroad.
I would blame the politicians if it ends up that Irish workers desperate for jobs start picketing these places because they have been discriminated against in their own land where they were born and grew up. I would blame the politicians in government for any cross cultural strife because ultimately most Brasilians I know are hard working, kind and nice people who easily fit into our society but people with families who are used to employment losing their jobs due to the gombeens they trusted in government wouldnt exactly be in a calm state.

    Nice bit of racism there....
Actual morality is doing what is right regardless of what you're told. Religious morality is doing what you're told, regardless of if it's right.
