Peter, try living on 66 euro a week here.

I could take a 3% hit off my dole

As a single man, recently unemployed (6 months) I could take the 3% cut which equates to just over €6 -the price of a pint & the Sun.
But I know a lot of families and couples woul find it difficult, so what ever appraoch they take it should be precise and targetted.
On the rent supplement, its fine if they want to cut it ( to hit landlords ) but rent itself would have to come down, hich in my experience is not happening.

Agreed. Those on social welfare throughout the Tiger got generous increases, we should now cut their dole but not new entrants.

welfare in the UK is not 66 euro a week. Thats the JSA payment there are other payments as well, such as housing benefit, so 66euro after ur rent and utilities are paid is better than a lot of working people in ireland have......

See Jobcentre Plus - Working Age Benefits Jobseeker's Allowance

Job Seekers allowance for those over 25 is £60.50 per week.

There is also rent allowance etc here too, the fact remains rates in Ireland are still much higher than in the UK

Government is going to have to tax the minimum wage next year which will also necessitate the cutting of social welfare to maintain the gap between working at minimum wage and welfare.

Those who think that IBEC's suggestion is rich should have heard Blair Horan the head of the CPSU on the News headlines saying that the public would tolerate tax rises more than cuts in public service pay. Tell me which is the more transparent vested interest?

I'm currently unemployed and in receipt of €204 per week. Were it not for the support of my partner I could not make ends meet. As it is it's a struggle but any cut right now would hurt me severely and I'm certain I'm not alone. The Irish stockbrokers and IBEC who are the ones calling for this have no concept what it is like having to struggle and survive on such a paltry amount weekly. I am now filling out a form for the social welfare indicating all my recent efforts to find employment, I'm fairly sure these so called "business leaders" would strugle with filling out a similar form especially if it was asking what contribution they are making to get me and others like me back working.

Sure, cut the dole. Cut it down to subsistence level for families and give single people nothing. Let them line up at soup kitchens, put them out on the streets and let them sleep rough. After about a month of this chaos will ensue. The first to get targeted will be immigrants, lots of them will be badly beaten some even killed. Then we will have riots, hungry people have nothing to loose. Should be very interesting indeed.
