The softening up and the spinning has started, looks like the tax payer is doing to have to foot the bill to kick off the car sales market. Seeing as the banks aint lending, I cant see this working. Odd that they can find money to scrap cars but cant find money for vaccines for cervical cancer.

By extension of your logic , the goverment should put all revenue into health and nothing else, every budget is about balance. That said I dont understand this scrappage scheme as how are people going to get finance to buy these cars, i know of nobody that has got any kind of bank loan in the last 6 months, either cc, car loan , overdraft etc.
its about the cost of the scheme and I used the vaccine as an example, 10 million is not a lot.
I've gotten a mortgage and an overdraft, and been offered a loan... all in the last 6 months.

Funny enough i was going to start a thread on this .I was listening to Morning Ireland and the head of the motor industry was on.
Now forgive me if im wrong but he was saying that he wanted to kick start the market for cars over ten years old. (therefore his logic was that these consumers would not be in the market before.)
Well im sorry but the best way to kick start the industry is to cut prices. Myself and my husband both drive prefectly good cars -1998 and 1999 . They are not bangers.
I have over the last few years wandered in and out of carshows . The most galling attudie was that of the sales people. Would not take our car as a trade in. Looked at us like we were dirt . And the price of a modest saloon car new was 20,000 plus.
There is no way in the wide earthly world i would consider spending 10k on a car not to mind 20k plus.
If people didnt buy into buying a new car in the so called "boom" years. Why would they start now with a token of 3000 scrappage..
My cars are fine thank you very much .I sure as hell dont need a 20k plus 09 number plate sitting in my drive.
I agree with the majority view here. There is no justification for a car sales industry bailout. They need to cut their prices, not have them propped up with badly needed tax revenue.
As for the jobs selling cars. Yes, some will go, but let's face it, selling cars ain't rocket science. When the economy picks up, jobs will be created again. But hopefully, at a more sustainable level than during the boom.
The mentality is still all wrong. Ireland does not produce cars, kickstarting the car industry is not going to generate any wealth, only debt, and of that debt, 7k will go to the government to pay for junkets and bank bail outs, and the other 15 grand will go to japan or the U.K. or germany where the cars are actually produced leaving the Irish economy in a worse position than it was in before.
Actual morality is doing what is right regardless of what you're told. Religious morality is doing what you're told, regardless of if it's right.

Give them incentives to retrofit their roadside architect-designed glasshouses for tomato growing - a useful import substitution scheme
