Cowen predicts 10% drop in standard of living.

What exactly does this mean? A 10% drop in everybodies earnings?

I don´t wish to seem snotty, but this is basic econ stuff that you will need to look up.

When you see the words "Mises" or "Hayek" in someone's post, just ask yourself: do I really want to ban paper money and go back to gold?

You have to pity the kind of people who buy into conspiracy theories. I find the following to be the saddest words on the internet: "Re: connection between Bilderberg puppet lady gaga and viral outbreak in ukraine "

    It can mean a drop in;

    1. Income per person
    2. Poverty rate.
    3. Access and quality of health care.
    4. Income growth inequality
    5. Educational standards.
    6. Prob lots more besides.

Or to put it in simple terms, it is the ease by which people living in a time or place are able to satisfy their wants.

Personally, I'd take that Cowen comment as extending to everything - use 1-6 above and take it from there.... major all round

That does not explain it to me.

I think the OP is justified in asking. What is Cowen using to measure "standard of living"?

He could just as easily have said 10% drop in wage rates, etc.

Ahem, do you think that the answer to that question is unavailable?

Is it your belief that the precise definition of what measure of SOL is being used is going to be a secret?

If it's no secret I'd like to know what it is...

If he came out with an empassioned speech about how he plans to stop the fall in living standards and state categorically, that by the end of 09 if the economy hasn't turned around he will resign, then no-one would have a problem and respect his courage.

He has no courage though, he is a political coward. He hasn't taken one big decision or proposed any serious plan to deal with the crisis and so it's increasinly difficult to treat him as anything other than a clown.

And when you asked, the office of the taoiseach said "sorry, we do not release that information"?

Do you expect they would keep it from you if you did ask?
