    Public Sector Vs Private Sector

What justifies cutbacks in the public sector? What can the government afford to cut back on in this sector? Why should the public sector bear the burden of cutbacks in this economic crisis over the private sector? Any suggestions? Pay inequalities maybe?

The question is, can the government afford to keep such a large PS and support staff?

Anyways, public sector wages will also have to fall enough to re-employ the unemployed. Don't ask me which ones, we have a price system for that.

WE WILL ALL FEEL THE BURDEN OF THE COMING MONTHS. WHEN WILL YOU ALL REALISE THIS? - public, private, anything in between including those on social welfare. If we don't feel it directly we will feel it through family and friends and we will feel for them.

In my view, the last thing this government needs is to create a situation which REQUIRES a lot of support staff to deal with it but that's only my opinion.

I'm getting really annoyed with the way some in the public service are playing the "poor little me" card.

Government income is €64 million a day less than Government expenditure.

We need to reduce expenditure. End. Of!

Who in the public service would be playing this card?

The mistake is in treating the public service as one monolithic entity with uniform workload and pay. This is not the case. For example, not all public service workers actually earn scandalous amounts of money; many have mediocre incomes and some even struggle to support their families. It's the ones at the top, the TDs, Ministers, Director Generals etc who really rake it in. We would do better to work on these guys' pay packages than to aim at the lower downs.

Workload within the public service is also uneven. There is a perception that the civil service is riddled with lazy wasters who do nothing but sit around all day. This may be the case in some areas but take, for example, the social welfare dept where workers are absolutely run off their feet trying to cope with all the new sign-ons and have been begging for support staff to be transferred from the other departments for months. On the other hand, the government is raking in considerably less in revenue these days so presumably there isn't as much work to be done in the revenue department? Why not re-allocate the workers there and get better value for money?

    Two Questions for you:

1, Can you tell me how many public sector workers have joined the dole que over the last 12 months? And if not, can you point to where the 'burden' has fallen on the public sector?
    2. Can you perhaps explain why the public sector no longer want equality of pay with the private sector, despite them being the ones clamouring for it 12 months ago?
