Australia calls a halt to immigration

Just on the News at One that Australia are cutting back on immigration. They are cutting out immigration on a range of skills areas that are competing with locals for work. All the construction trades were mentioned including plasterers, brickies and plumbers etc.

not quite calling a halt - I think the report said they're reducing the number of people admitted by 18,000.

You mean Irish construction workers who are out of a job won't be able to emigrate to Australia?

So much for our close historical ties...

Nice headline. Here are the facts:
    immigratoin quotas:

    2007-08:

    Family – 49,870
    Skilled – 108,540

    Total – 158,630

    2008-09 (as originally announced):

    Family – 56,500
    Skilled – 133,500

    Total – 190,300

The cut announced is 18,500 to the skilled class, making the revised 2008-09 quotas:
    Family – 56,500
    Skilled – 115,000

    Total – 171,500

Sensible? Likely. A "halt to immigration"? Hardly.

When I left it, they were screaming for tradesmen.

Even an effete, intellectual dandy like myself found work plastering and laying pipes.

The problem with this recession over the 1980's is that we have nowehere to emigrate. If I got the heave ho frm work Id be over to Oz so damn quick........if there actually was any jobs.

You should see how hard it is to get a job while over here before even thinking about coming over...

I know a few people who moved over there, one only went at Christman and he's a plasterer.
He says that work is drying up, and he's doing some time working on scaffolding along with plastering to get in the hours.
