i then went to the south and got the dole for a few months at 204.30 euro a week, and i was certainly entitled to it as i paid PRSI in the south for 5 years previous.

Who would have guessed it ?

Most generous dole in Europe + mass immigration = disastrous social welfare bill.

They must be short of calculators in the finance dept.

So far, the basic living costs haven't dropped, just the likes of mortgage payments which few long term invalidity recipients have.

just a thought; is it possible to switch to voucher-based SW schemes instead of direct cash payments?

negotiate with a few chains for preferential discounts and bingo, massive savings in the SW bill

    thoughts?

Vouchers are not a bad idea but honestly the system needs a far greater overhaul than that. In the UK you get 62GBP = 67 Euro while in Ireland you cant live off 203 Euro - why is that? How much more can the taxpayer carry the situation? Everyone needs to share the burden and cut back.

Or a credit type card with into which a large portion of the SW is paid into and can only be used to purchase a defined range of goods (e.g. excluding drink and tobacco) in the State and the government takes a slice of the revenue from retailers because of its bulk purchasing power.

Good in principle but propably a nightmare to implement and oversee the scams it would generate.

In reality this one isn't going to be touched at least as far as the basic payment goes.

I'd say the fuel allowance will be cut or abolished and child payments means tested.

Absolutely no way must anymore immigrants be allowed in unless they have been head hunted in advance for very highly skilled jobs that just cannot be filled internally.

That could not be more than a few score per month in all truth.

15,000 + more since 1 January is just nuts!
