Cos if people only had a roof over there head , they would be less demanding on the state .imo.
The NHS, while flawed, is indeed superior and obviously cheaper. The UK will be looking at that in the near future with the intention of enforcing residency requirements for treatment initially and eventually introducing a raft of charging mechanisms to balance the books.
Social housing is more prevalent in some areas. But it is of course irrelevant to compare our infrastructure with Britain's. They've had motorways for fifty years and we still haven't completed our network or near it. London's had an underground for 150 years and we don't even have a train line to the airport in Dublin.
The issue of social welfare payments can only be related to relative cost of living. The cost of living in Ireland is NOT four times the cost of living in the North. That's why the gap ought to be closed.
But the reason why it MUST be closed is because we simply can't afford to pay it any longer.

A champion of the people emerges with the age-old and appealing promise of "something for nothing" - to be financed through every-increasing taxes. Supply and demand are thrown out of gear - the overhead goes up; the effective use of human energy goes down; the standard of living is lowered because money cannot buy wealth that is not produced.

The social welfare shafting that goes on in this country is savage.I had guy working for me ,had to let him go.He's shacked up with a girl who has a child ,he gets the rockin roll, she get unmarried mothers, live in a new house on a private estate, all paid by the taxpayer. He says he'll never work again the state will look after him, life is great.

Frankly its mental imo . And i am on the 'rock n roll' . Its just a one size fits all solution . The fact is many of us could study or work or whatever , but the way things are run, means that its handier on the dole. Now people may say 'stewie , your smart ,handsome, etc, stop whingin , do a course ' and shut up . The thing is I dont like students and I dont like manual labor . End of.

It is handier, but its a massive drain on a countries resources, and welfare creates poverty, ghettos, dependency , government inflation, envy etc.

well i cant argue against that . Social welfare like many areas of government is just not functioning correctly . Its a gravy train ,and im not talking about the people signing at the hatches .Im more talking about the numerous quangoes associated with unemployment ,ie FAS , various 'community centres' jobs for the boys, that kinda thing .
