Forbes 'Rich List' 2009 - just 5 'Irish' billionaires

    Forbes: The World's Billionaires

The richest people in the world have gotten poorer, just like the rest of us. This year the world's billionaires have an average net worth of $3 billion, down 23% in 12 months. The world now has 793 billionaires, down from 1,125 a year ago.

#1 William Gates III United States $40.0 Bn
#2 Warren Buffett United States $37.0

    #261 Pallonji Mistry Ireland $2.5
#296 John Dorrance III Ireland $2.3
    #305 Denis O'Brien Ireland $2.2
    #468 Dermot Desmond Ireland $1.5
    #468 Sean Quinn & family Ireland $1.5

    re. Pallonji Mistry

    Net Worth:$2.5 bil
    Fortune:inherited
    Source:construction
    Age:79
    Country Of Citizenship:Ireland
    Residence:Mumbai
    Industry:Construction & Engineering
    Education:NA,
    Marital Status:married, 4 children

Reclusive construction tycoon, rarely ever seen in public. His 140-year old Shapoorji Pallonji group which he chairs, is run by sons Shapoor and Cyrus. Got noticed when he built a palace for the Sultan of Oman in 1971. Bulk of fortune is private. Listed entity Forbes & Company sells water purifiers under Eureka Forbes brand. Goldman Sachs paid $50 million for minority stake in engineering arm Sterling & Wilson last year. Biggest asset remains 18.4% stake in Tata Sons, holding company of Tata Group which derives over 60% of its $48 billion revenues from overseas. Group undergoing financial hangover after buying binge of expensive acquisitions, notably Corus Steel and Jaguar Land Rover, forcing Tata Sons to pledge shares. Became Irish citizen in recent years but maintains a residence in Mumbai.

    re. John Dorrance III

    Net Worth:$2.3 bil
    Fortune:inherited
    Source:Campbell Soup
    Age:65
    Country Of Citizenship:Ireland
    Residence: Dublin
    Industry:Food
    Education:NA,
    Marital Status:married,

Grandson of Campbell Soup's founder, John Dorrance I, has led quiet life in South Dublin since cashing out of family business; from 1995 to 1996 sold off majority of his inherited 10.5% stake in soup for $1.5 billion. A well-timed bet: stock is down 23% from the date he sold his largest block of shares. Renounced U.S. citizenship and moved to Ireland shortly before selling, purportedly to avoid estate and capital gains taxes on coming windfall. Keeps a low profile and reportedly spends time in Bahamas with Finnish wife when not home in Ireland. Past pet causes have included legalization of game ranching in Wyoming and fox hunting in Great Britain.

The great transfer of wealth away from the celebrity Billionaires, to the people who never appear on any lists. The flooded the place with cheap credit, and then switched the tap off, soon they will be back to pickup all the assets for peanuts.

Surely a mistake here. Why is Denis O'Brien included here. Shouldn't he be Portugese? He can't be Irish - He doesn't pay his taxes here.

Tax is determined by ordinary residence. Irish people who are resident in other countries don't pay tax here.

US citizens are different, they have to pay US tax no matter where they live, but they can offset any local taxes against their US tax bill.

Mexican 'drug lord' on rich list

Forbes magazine's latest list of the world's billionaires includes Mexico's most wanted man - Joaquin Guzman. The 54-year-old, who is said to be the head of one of Mexico's most powerful drug cartels, is 701st on the list with an estimated fortune of $1bn (£722m). Mr Guzman, who escaped from a Mexican prison on 2001, is understood to be at large in Mexico or Central America. Mexican officials blame much of the recent violence in the north of the country on Mr Guzman.
