You must have forgotten the 2007 general election? That elected the TDs that go to the Dail, the TDs then select the Taoiseach

I'll help you. We pay child benefit for children who in many cases have never even been in Ireland.

Of course in a number of these cases it's because the children don't exist...

That's what the Fianna Fail clowns cabinet has brought upon Irish workers and taxpayers.
i am fully away of child benefit, but it was unclear if the poster meant that or was trying to suggest all adults got monies.

Its nothing to do the the cabinet, these are the rules of the EU; and I am in favour of strict checks against any form of welfare fraud and severe punishment for anyone found guilty of it, no matter what their nationality.

I can count the number of PPS numbers issued, so what? doesnt mean they are on welfare, more likely they are working.

So you want to assign welfare based on race and nationality?

That's just a load of populist sh*te. Well your whole post is actually.
Its not mpopulism it makes economic sense. In that money will be saved and no one will suffer, thats its likely to be a popular measure shouldnt be held against it.
Its not assigning welfare on the basis on race or nationalirty but of residency, which is one of the principals upon which welfare is calculated now, for example and Irish person in london cannot claim social welfare in Dublin, but can in London, so I am not altering the principals of welfare.

it is not an eu rule that welfare must be paid to irish born children living abroad.
Its a rule that children living in ireland from other EU countries do.

To clarify (Child Benefit-Information from CitizensInformation.ie)

    Child Benefit and EU Regulations

EU/EEA citizens and Swiss nationals working in Ireland, satisfy the habitual residence condition for Child Benefit.

If you are an EU/EEA citizen or a Swiss national and work in a country covered by EU Regulations, the country you work in usually pays Child Benefit even if your family is living in another country. However, if your children are living in another EU/EEA country you should still apply for any Family Benefits you are entitled to there.

If the Family Benefit you get in the country your children are living is less than the Child Benefit payment here, your Irish Child Benefit payment will make up the difference. For more information on how EU rules affect Child Benefit, contact the Child Benefit Section.

Countries covered by EU Regulations are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom (excluding the Channel Islands).
