The government is preparing a range of tax increases that could cut take-home pay for middle-income earners by up to €2,000 a year.
Rises of up to 2% on the 20% rate of tax, 3% on the 41% rate, and a new, top tax rate of 48% for those earning more than €100,000 would provide the government with almost €1.6 billion this year, and nearly €2.2 billion in 2010.
Senior government figures have confirmed that while the precise tax formula will not be agreed until the end of the month, middle and high income earners on salaries ranging from €40,000 to €100,000 will bear the brunt of the tax increases on April 1 designed to raise €4.5 billion.
