    Hurricane Chávez - washingtonpost.com

Go to the International Press Institute and Human Rights Watch for in depth analysis on curtailment of freedom of speech, extra-judicial killings and torture. But its ok for some people because he is a socialist. Viva La Revolucion! As a latte-sipping middle class yankee hating westerner might say from the comfort of their living room in a democratic free market country.

Oh for Christ sake will you give it a rest, you're coming across like a Daily mail hack.

The Washington post? Hardly an impartial institution now is it?

HRW has an axe to grind with Chavez over his expulsion of their delegation. The usual fuzz placed at Chavez’s door but even they acknowledge the very real positives Chavez has brought to the ordinary citizens in Venezuela, the very people Chavez claims are his only concern, not kowtowing to an international agency that proscribes what it considers to be democracy. But even on that note, he's not a dictator, he’s democratically elected.

Has he made mistakes? Of course he has. Will he make more mistakes? Of course he will.

Is he beyond critique? Of course not.

Is he the best thing to happen to Venezuela for over three decades, you betchya.

The proof is as clear as day. It’s simply a matter of reading up on the history of the region.

You can do it from the safely of your nice cosy armchair, so it wont be too taxing you.

The proof is not clear as day except for people like you who will cheer on anyone who comes out with 70's style leftist rhetoric and good old fashioned American bashing. The Venezuelan Statistics office in 2004 actually came with figures which showed poverty had increased under Chavez. What did he do? He changed the definition of poverty so it was "only" 40%. Venezuela has the highest number of deaths by Gunfire in the world according to the UN. Transparency International ranks Venezuela as the most corrupt country in the Western Hemisphere after Haiti and its getting worse. So the proof isn't "clear as day"

Adolf Hitler was democratically elected - was he not a dictator?

I wonder what you would think of good auld Hugo if he forcibly took your family's land and kicked you all out, no matter who he divided it up between afterwards! I bet you'd whistle a different tune then.

    The road to serfdom

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6lSR62wmSo]YouTube - The Road to Serfdom in Cartoons -Based on book by F.A. Hayek[/ame]
A champion of the people emerges with the age-old and appealing promise of "something for nothing" - to be financed through every-increasing taxes. Supply and demand are thrown out of gear - the overhead goes up; the effective use of human energy goes down; the standard of living is lowered because money cannot buy wealth that is not produced.

A positive step from Chavez. The land should be used for people's needs not the profit of a few.
