The reaction to this post is quite distressing to me. This is exactly what the people of Ireland should be doing. The Celtic Tiger was born out of the insurgence of multi-national corporations setting up shop in Ireland because it was economically feasible for them to do so. They received tax breaks, labor at the time was cheaper and they had a foot in the EU. Time has moved on, there are no multi-nationals sailing out in the Atlantic – they have sailed on to Asia. Now we need to find the “next new thing” ourselves. What can Ireland do for herself? Should she devote more money to developed intellectual property in science and technologies? We have some of the most competitive universities in the world here. What about government investment in small business – small business drives more than 50% of any economy. Ireland seems perfectly located to advance wind and solar technology (remember where you start can lead into other areas that have not yet been explored). Panels should be formed, discussions should take place and Ireland MUST learn to become self reliant.

When the people of Ireland start doing it, rather than a PR company, let us know.

No we don't! Ask anyone competent who works in an Irish Univeristy in research and you will hear a litany of problems and bureaucracy. We have inflated our ratings through excellent humanties research but in science and technology we lag far behind the research cores. Look at the breakdown to see the ugly picture. Our maths and science education levels from 2nd level are appalling and we have had massive grade inflation in our second tier universities.
Google said they could have created 100 more jobs here in January but there wern't enough qualified applicants.

Over 70 universities in the US have endowements of over 1 billion euros worth- we can't compete with that but we can by specialization. However, all high tech equipment and services if you work in research here must be imported from the Uk and Europe. It creates serious time delays.

We pay the best rates of pay to post docs and research lecturers in the world and yet we still find it hard to attract world class staff in the numbers we need. Anybody i know from abroad who has worked in Ireland in research leaves terribly frustrated when they discover the laziness, tribal nature, lack of accountability and cute whoreisness of Irish life.

We need serious reform in this country and a wholesale removal of many of the managers in this country.

This campagin is a complete personification of how public life is conducted in Ireland. It is secret, unaccountable and driven by PR and insiders.

It should be open, and ideas directed through the political system which has a mandate, but there is no shortage of ideas on the opposition (and government i would hazard), just entrenched interests, incompetence and people invested in a system that rewards personal contacts, not merit; that blocks implementation.

Hahah, ah you picked the wrong man to pigeon hole. I'm in the process of organising a political party to put many of the good ideas on p.ie into practice, see sig, and you're more than welcome to join up. I have put my own time and plenty of my own money into this idea, even though it may ultimately go nowhere.

If I felt any group in government or the opposition had what it takes to resolve the problems facing the country, I'd be supporting them in every way. The sad fact is that they do not, and are unlikely to be able to do anything useful for the foreseeable future.

As for the PR company, I was initially in favour of the idea, but if you look through the thread, there are some seriously ugly undercurrents to the initiative, which raise question marks that aren't easily answered.

I'm not trying to "pigeon hole" you, Dios - I applaud you! That's what I'm talking about - ACTION. Let's just not cut off all the avenues before we explore them - that's all.

Many thanks, I appreciate that. Its not an easy route to take. The main problem with this idea that has arisen is the terms and conditions specifically claim ownership of ideas submitted in perpetuity, and the list of sponsors look suspiciously like FF sponsers, as well as the fact that the company doing it has run PR campaigns for FF before, from what I gather, which all point to a profit motive here. As you can see, second post in the thread, I was in favour of it initially, but emergent facts have caused me to withdraw that support.
