The airport has its own scam. They have a multi-level queuing system which means it can take 2 hours to get to a customer. The drivers also have to pay over €600 to the airport for the right to bring the airport's customers home.

If the taxi unions were any good they would fight that scam before they take on the regulator.

Just on that, the knowledge is only needed if you want to drive a Black cab, Hackneys and Minicabs drivers are not required to sit the test, it takes nearly 3 years for a driver to become au fait with the number of routes required to pass the exam

Black Cab drivers are agitating quite strongly for a change in the rules to recognize these disadvantages (and have it dismissed as a prerequisite) although Black cab drivers do charge a premium as well.

I honestly don’t think Dublin is big enough to warrant the necessity of such an extensive exam.

Yeah I wonder what the real figure is.

But I’ve heard this figure used to compare numbers of taxis in cities such as London, New York and Paris.

What the taxi driver spokesmen are forgetting to mention of course is that these cities have extensive, highly integrated public transport alternatives that 21st century Dublin is sadly lacking.

It’s almost as if Government policy was to allow taxis make up the galling inadequacies of the public transport system in this city.

The government may take comfort from the ability of taxis to cushion the effects of potential rail and bus strikes by union militants. With people sharing four to a taxi,a high proportion of the population dependant on public transport could afford fares to get to and from work. They could simply go to bus stops to find fellow commuters and negotiate a shared fare.

But nobody's forcing the drivers to service the airport. If its costing them to do so, they should stop.

The majority cannot therefore be the elite.
