    Where are the unemployed protests?

All those protesting still have jobs and will have jobs (if the IMF don't come in). The people who really have something to protest are the newly unemployed and impoverished.

    Where are the unemployed protests???
The truth is incontrovertible, malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end; there it is.

Coming to town near you soon. At the moment a lot of people are still in denial, that will change over the course of six months or so.

a critical mass has not yet being reached. Of the 330k unemployed many are not without a job in that they are working part-time or half weeks. Many of those unemployed are using redundancy payments or savings. That will run out. The jobs will continue to run scarce. We may get through this spring without civil unrest. But when summer jobs fail to materialise, social welfare crackdowns commence and rates have to be cut (which they will), next autumn will be very bleak.
A clear 3 year plan is needed now. If cowen does not deliver it on saturday he should be the next to get the sack.. .

It's hard to see what he can do though. The government's leg room is constrained by the public finances and the banking system. By my reckoning, these two problems need to be fixed before we stand much of a chance of fixing the jobs situation.

A champion of the people emerges with the age-old and appealing promise of "something for nothing" - to be financed through every-increasing taxes. Supply and demand are thrown out of gear - the overhead goes up; the effective use of human energy goes down; the standard of living is lowered because money cannot buy wealth that is not produced.

Who would organize the unemployed anyway.
When you're without you're forgotten about.

It's like the farmers, they're so randomly distributed across Ireland that they're a difficult group to mobilise.
