POVERTY and inequality cause the premature deaths of 5,400 people every year in Ireland, according to a shock new report.

So if FF and the Greens increase poverty then more poor people will die -which will have the effect of reducing the amount of poor people depending on social welfare. The money saved could then be siphoned off to the bankers and builders. The double effect, which will really please the bankers, is that if they also increase inequality - shutting down agencies that promote equality and the like - then this will also cause poverty and bring on more deaths and savings on social welfare!

Poverty and Inequality is Killing 5,400 Irish People Every Year

Government cutting special-needs payments on the quiet.

The Irish state has been cutting special-needs payments on the quiet to very sick children.

This is a disgrace and as usal the media decides to ignore it.

Sick disabled children are paying for greedy bankers and elite politicans.

The same week we discover public servants get pay rises we discover down syndrome children are having their special needs payments cut to 0.

How can we as a nation justify the cuts to sick children and yet allow people like Enda Kenny to spend over €500 on paper openers!

More than 100 parents with special needs children are protesting outside Leinster House this lunchtime against cuts to the domiciliary care allowance.

Parents say the monthly allowance of €309.50 is vital in helping to give their children a better quality of life.

Many have had their allowances stopped in recent months. Thousands of applications are still under review.

Deirdre Kiernan from Straffan in Co Kildare, who has a daughter with down syndrome and autism, said she is "livid" with the Government.

FF CRITICISES HEAVY-HANDED REVIEW OF DOMICILIARY CARE ALLOWANCE
Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Social Protection Barry Cowen has criticised the heavy-handed review of the Domiciliary Care Allowance, which has led to 193 children with serious disabilities losing their payments.

The Government reviewed the 402 cases last year and cut the Domiciliary Care Allowance for almost half of these children.

Deputy Cowen commented, “The Domiciliary Care Allowance is a monthly payment of €309.50 to the parent or carer of a child with a disability so severe that they require extra attention above that of another child the same age. The families of 193 of these children have now suddenly been told that they will no longer receive the payment. Most of these are children with autism over the age of 4. There is no doubt that they need extra care and supervision compared to other children of their age.

“This was a blunt and heavy-handed review. The process did not include any face-to-face assessment of the children affected, so officials had no first-hand knowledge of the care they required. The review also ignored medical evidence of the children’s conditions, and the evidence from parents about the level of care and attention the children need. People are justifiably wondering how the decisions on cuts were made.

“This is an extremely worrying trend. This Government made a number of decisions in their first budget to target the most vulnerable groups, and children in particular, for the bulk of cuts this year. These children have a life-long illness and the support their families receive from the State helps provide extra care that they need.

hiya have to say your post is spot on..Sometimes I am ashamed of what is happening in this country..I mean these cuts are so evil ... I mean I have been on here about cutting welfare but not to the extent of one section. It does need to come down unfortunately but I dont see how they can be imposing these cuts whilst the public sector get more and the gov get more and increase their expenses and give more to banks..Its f-ing crazy...I would have no problem paying more income tax to support a reverse of what you outlined but unfortunately any increase in mine or any other tax payer would never find its way to these unfortunate people

Why don't you donate to charities working with disabled children?

Fair dues to you for that. The only problem with charity donations, even Bernados, is the number of well paid jobs you're supporting at the same time - this country is such a cess pit that we can't even rely on the charities to do the right thing.

True which is why actually forceing the issue with a flow of cash from the tax payer would be a better way of doing it and it wouldnt cost any increase in paying wage
