It is hereby decreed that anyone who uses the term 'An Bord Snip' from here on will suffer repeated snipping to their genitalia in order to prevent them passing on whatever damaged gene leads them to believe it funny...

They're not ... disbanded as a Quango and due to lack of funding.
    Well... it's possible

The Public Sector have taken a 7.5% hit (even they it is a contribution to a guaranteed pension) and an emabrgo on reccuitment and unspecified reductions on sussistence and expenses . This is probably as much as will be recovered from the €20Bn public sector pay bill.

Will anyone dare to reduce the €18bn social welfare bill?
Single mothers, Polish and middle class children getting children's benefit, freeing those in the welfare trap (by reducing their income) and giving a nudge to people to emigrate are all suggested targets by right wing-nuts - but should we not have a Commission on Social Welfare to see if we can use this crisis as an opportunity?

Fo the next budget, the Commission on taxation will advise that we broaden the tax base (ie more taxes on more people in more ways).

The Public Service is next for the another €20bn and that has been delegated to this board - it should be reporting weekly and implemented the following week by the government. An Bord Snip (nua) should be an An Bord Slash.

Everyone's standard of living will be reduced for the next 5 years at least - but it will take 21 years of -4% growth to get the economy back to 1996 levels (according to ibis on another thread).

Do you have a source for this? If cynical opportunist was the main motivation - why would Cowen alienate 350,000 (and their families) voters? Bertie is gone you know.

How much of that goes towards social and affordable housing? I'd say we can reduce it by about that much.

A very good place to start.

As for June deadline - that is way too late. There should be cuts coming every week. Different sections. Different depts. Different lobbyists.
