Do people get the dole other than because they made contributions to the system ?

And if a person leaves Ireland, do they get a rebate on the contributions they made while here ?

Just been asked this by a friend, and I don't know. Any idea ?

They aren't going to go home if they get as much (or more) from the dole as they would working back home. 8,000 foreign-nationals have gotten PPS no.s in this country in 2009 so far, of whom around 1400 are poles. Despite the recession, Fianna Fáil continue to hand out non-EU work-permits/student visas like there's no tomorrow.

If they have paid into the system for two years ie having paid PRSI they are entitled to the same benefits as an Irish citizen. If they havent paid into the system they may qualify for jobseekers allowance.

No,they do not get a rebate.

Are you serious? There are still thousands coming in each month. Check CSO figures for as late as November & December.

On an anecdotal note, I came through Passport Control at Dublin Airport a few nights ago.

It was chaos. First of all, they had no separate queue for Irish or EU citizens. That's an outrageous discourtesy to Irish people coming into their own country. (Is this a new policy, or just the cops acting up?)
But what perplexed me even more was that the hall was full of Brazilians, people I took to be Pakistanis, and some Africans. Far more non-EU than Irish citizens. Makes no sense at a time we are heading for half a million unemployed, and is a sure guarantee for social resentment, even disorder.

3 1 in 4 asylum seekers is from Nigeria, which makes 1000 per year from a country of 150,000,000 people. There are estimated to be at least 1,000 illegal Irish who go to the USA every year. If they thought applying for asylum would allow them to stay, they would.
    4) Just because Nigeria is considered a safe country it doesn't mean that someone's personal circumstances don't mean that they are being persecuted.
    5)What's your point?
Point 3 above is nonsense. For it to have any validity you'd have to show that people who are worried about immigration into Ireland support illegal immigration into the US. Care to prove that?

Thank you - assuming your info is more accurate than the last time, re working in Poland

So then, Irelandproud/Yukon Tom/Southkerry/TomTum... the issue of whether we can afford it or not is simply irrelevant - agree ?

There is already a thread about Non-nationals being Gardai.......................... I do believe the downturn and peoples attitudes with immigration will be inflamed with this development.

I am rather alarmed that Irish people are becoming very, very angry about Immigration, yet the state is encouraging migrants to join the ranks of Law-Enforcement.

Personally, I think this idea is stupid and the UK has failed miserably with this method............. High Ranking Minority Officers have complained about past and current prejudice existing in the Forces................. to the point of them discouraging their communities joining.

    We all have our moments.

They do not have open borders with the rest of the EU,just the A8,Ireland,GB,and Sweden. Kind of ironic that the poles have tighter immigration controls than ourselves.
