Gardai "Disappointed" - Blue Flu returns?

The Garda Representative Association (GRA) is disappointed by the proposals made by the government today.

The association said they see it as Government protection for higher income earners to the detriment of the lower paid. GRA President Michael O’Boyce said: "Our members with junior service will carry an inordinate burden if this measure is implemented.
They obviously don't see it as a foregone conclusion.

    Trouble ahead?

You know what, give them the choice. Don't pay the levy and pay into a defined payment pension scheme with no guarantee of what you'll get at the end or pay the levy and get your guarantee. Howm many do you think will refuse to pay the levey and take their chances?
The Mahon Tribunal found Olivia Mitchell to have received an inappropriate payment from Frank Dunlop at the time of the 1992 Election. F.G. Gael has taken no action against her.

It would be enlightening to know what these "proposals" are...
Ireland interests are best secured within a more dynamic EU. Vote YES to Lisbon.

But getting back to the actual point... do you think it's fair that the burden is disproportionately falling on junior members ?

I love all this union talk of higher paid versus lower paid. I presume the unions haven't copped it yet that they ARE the higher paid! Its the private sector thats now lower paid.

Are the unions suggesting that their higher paid members aren't shouldering enough of the burderen? Perhaps cowen should have doubled the levy in that case.

The average salary of a full time worker in the public sector is €49k, in the private sector it's only €41k. This is the ridiculous situation that benchmarking has creted. Those that are earning wealth for the country are being paid less than those who's function is to support them.

because we are better educated, work in the same job longer and the public sector is 33% professional compared to 7% in the private sector.

When the averager private sector salary doesnt include the agricultural, fishery, forestry and most critically, the self employed (tax dodgers. gps, solicitors etc) of course its going to be different.

FFS - there are LOADS of other threads to discuss the details of the levies/cuts and public Vs private. This thread is about the response of the Gardai.

Does the use of the word "if" signify much?

I hate to be a pain but could you source the stats you just espoused re: 33% of public sector workers being 'professional'? That'd be great. WE can debate the topic intelligently when you produce those stats. (If you ignore this request we'll make our own minds up).
