    Lenihan on Newsnight (Jan 22): "We have a thriving economy"

    BBC Newsnight (January 22, 2009)

    [ame=http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=FsidnfopeB8]YouTube - Ireland's Recession- Banks, Construction,Financial Institutions[/ame]

    Not a great Newsnight report (e.g., mistakes in name captions, references to Anglo Irish bank as 'AIB'), but Mr. Lenihan's claim that our economy is "thriving" leaves me speechless.

    It was a very poor interview by newsnight standards - they clearly had done no research and relied on tory anti-euro talking points.

    I thought Lenihan came off quite well - he's hardly going to go on foriegn TV and talk Ireland down, is he? Lets put on a good face for the BBC and keep honesty at home where it belongs.

    The guy is a basket case. Thriving economy indeed! Time for another SSIA scheme.

    This idiot should be getting the fraud squad to go after Seanie and his friends and tip off the media before the raids, then the international media and investors might take the place seriously.

    I understand the need the 'fly the flag' when talking to foreign media, but there is 'foreign' and 'foreign'. There has been so much coverage of our difficulties in the UK media that Leninhan's claim on the BBC that our economy is actually thriving just leaves him looking demented. Not likely to inspire confidence that the Government is really facing up to the gravity of the crisis.

    Reminds me of the old joke about the Irish lad on Mastermind in the 70's. After answering 'Pass' to the first 10 questions with a smug grin on his face, an Irish accent pipes up from the audience - 'That's it Paddy, tell'em nathin!'
