Is a time of deflation a good time to increase the duty on Cigarettes?

I would have thought so. The two reasons why it could not be increased more was the risk of increasing inflation and the lowering of the value of sterling could lead to the margin decreasing that punters could just as easily buy them over the border as well as the risk of smuggling.

These considrations apply less now.
This is a purely economic argument of how it affects the public finances since there is no case to be made that smokers already pay their fair share given the burden on the health system, leaving aside the death of 6,000 through a slow and painful means of suicide. (you would never guess i was a smoker but copped on).
Should we hit the addicts for more cash?

The smugglers will love them for it anyway.
Its only a chat, we ain't the world council.
In 2000 the Women's Institute in Britain gave Tony Blair the slow hand clap to demonstrate their contempt.
It was dignified, restrained and effective.Doesn't Bertie deserve the same scorn. No shouting, no abuse, no agression just a relentless slow clap whenever he speaks in public would be enough to end that man's presidential fantasy.

No, it's basically a tax on the poor, who smoke more and can least afford to pay, but will continue smoking. There are better targets, richer and more deserving ones, who created the sh1t we are in at the moment, screw them first.

If we do have deflation then social welfare should cut. However that it not acceptable for so many obvious reasons. Your point could be a justification for paying social welfare in food vouchers - another great right wingnut idea.
The increase can partially fund a national rollout of the allen cars programme (this is what worked for me -reason and not wanting to be cheated ie brainwashing). Watching the nicotine adds make me very suspicious (stressed? Smoke, but you can't because you have quit).
It is a regressive form of taxation but does hit not only a non-necessity but a harmful one.

I think the only concern is the risk of revenue loss through sterlin depreciation. How much is a pack of twenty up north?

tax policy is in this vcountry is all wrong..........we should tax things we dont want people to do =, like smoke and pollute, and not tax things which we want to encourage like job creation.

I started a therad a while back advocating the abolition of the cigarette tax.
• it's regressive
• it's a tax on the addicted
• there's no market failure justification for it

Why is there never a mention on increasing the cost of booze? Its always cigarettes.

Why don't we lgalise prostitution and tax them

Why don't we increase a hundred fold the tax on high couture clothing

Why don't we put enormous taxes on crocodile shoes and hanbags.

Why don't we have a revolution, get everyone off their bloody ar.ses.and start a marching season, this one to Leinster house:

Why am I asking these questions. I forget now.
