The gombeen men still at it

Euro and sterling have come close to parity, but retailers have stubbornly refused to pass on the savings to Irish shoppers. A Forfás study showed that overheads in the Republic are not as high as some retailers claim, and don't justify the high prices.

The Irish business class are all pleading poverty right now but the fact is they are ripping us off.

I blame the Irish public - we are among the most accepting of poor service and high prices anywhere in the world -take the lack of outrage over ridiculous mobile phone costs as an example.

Some of its our own fault... Some of it IS the native business fraternity. But that does not explain the pure profiteering by British retailers who operate in an openly competitive market in the UK unlike here...

We should pick one and boycott it. I nominate Debenhams. They appear to be the most cynical.

I'm finding it amusing at the moment hearing:

    > PS workers saying they won't "accept" pay cuts
    > Home sellers saying they won't "accept" price drops below what their house is "worth"
    > Developers saying they "can't" sell new properties below "cost"
    > Businesses/retailers saying they "can't" cut prices

Seems these people's watches stopped sometime in the middle of 2006. All of their "choices" are illusory. The rest of us should relax about all these things, try hard to hold onto our jobs, and everything will be cheaper very soon.
