Shane Ross for Financial Regulator !

The Irish stock market is in the doldrums, no international trades ... nothing happening. Banking stocks have lost massive credibility and the regulation system has a lot to answer for - see here and here for evidence.

There's been numerous banking scandals and consumers have low trust of the banks also.

Shane Ross has an impeccable reputation, solid business understanding and a fine nose for b/s. He's got a good track record of managing staff and the banks all respect him (sometimes they laugh, sometimes they fear him but they always respect him).

Sure he'd need a strong deputy who'd be more au fait with detailed aspects of regulation but I think he's the perfect candidate for Financial Regulator, it'd be a huge break with tradition and would restore confidence in the Irish Banks.

Here's a chunk of his bio which shows quite a bit of financial services experience:
Shane Ross
Today, Shane is the Business Editor of the Sunday Independent, Ireland’s biggest selling broadsheet. A qualified stockbroker, he was executive chairman of Dillon and Waldron stockbrokers, and Irish Times stock exchange correspondent for 8 years. He is director or chairman of several investment and hedge funds including the Barings New Russia and SVM Global funds, and former chairman of the Kleinwort European Privatisation Trust.

Mary O Dea I think would be a good candidate.
Its only a chat, we ain't the world council.
In 2000 the Women's Institute in Britain gave Tony Blair the slow hand clap to demonstrate their contempt.
It was dignified, restrained and effective.Doesn't Bertie deserve the same scorn. No shouting, no abuse, no agression just a relentless slow clap whenever he speaks in public would be enough to end that man's presidential fantasy.

He would be an interesting choice. However the FF kleptocracy might want to give the job to one of their own.

Shane Ross would have no interest in this job in my opinion. I'd say it would be a bit too boring.

The civil servants who've occupied it to date have made it look boring, also in fairness Bertie tied their hands.

Shane Ross isn't someone who'll accept constraints and with this job he'd get access to all the books & data of the banks ! As is right now, as a mere journalist, he manages to ferret out great stories / scandals ... with the FR powers...

Shane Ross will be looking forward to a peaceful retirement.

The job of removing the ******************** from Irish society is best left to some over-enthusiastic pleb who thinks he'll be "going places" if he serves his time.

It would be great, but there is little chance of it happening.
A poster of some consequence...

The same logic would make Eddie Hobbs minister for finance, Michael O'Leary Minister for transport, Eamonn Dunphy head of the FAI & Joe Duffy a supreme court Judge!

Someones media profile means very little when you are considering a position as responsible as this.

Being a Financial Regulator would required a lot more than a healthy interest in finance and a fairly inquisitive mind.

I'm sure there are more qualified people.

Ps
I think this guy advocates the government compensating middle class people who invested in the banks shares,,,, Hmmm.
