EU Commission warned Gov about Fas in 2002

The European Commission warned the Irish government as far back as 2002 that serious problems existed with the internal and financial controls of Fas.

The confidential audit of the state agency uncovered ‘‘weak and unreliable’’ internal controls, no clear paper trails on major projects and several ‘‘unsound’’ applications for significant EU funds.

The final report, which was presented to the Irish government in early 2002, recommended suspending certain EU funds.

The report was never published, but has now been obtained by The Sunday Business Post.

I feel similar questions should be asked about Foras na Gaeilge. They havent produced an anual financial report for a few years now. I want to know as Im sure most other people do,where the money is being spent by these agencies of the state

Foreign agents interfering in our sovereign rights to feck things up again?
Ireland interests are best secured within a more dynamic EU. Vote YES to Lisbon.

    It was a confidential audit.

I hope you're not trying to pin the blame for this one on the EU?

All the problems in FAS are decisively within the sole remit of the Irish government.

Seems like it was about 2002 when I heard some funny stories about Fas which I didn't believe at the time. It is going to be interesting to see if further irregularities emerge.

Anybody know where exactly is Bertie's nose in this trough, have not seen his name on any of the flight lists or any of his rabble from Drumcondra and surely the blondes will have gone for the shopping.

What was Mary Harney's response to this audit? If she had taken steps on the back of this report, most of the current problems with FAS could have been avoided. It is a pity she is not accountable to anyone!!
