Crzay. Everyone should pay some tax no matter how small.

Is it just those claiming minimum wage or is it what they suggested the other day that the minimum wage amount would be deducted from all those subject to the levy? I.E. about half the average ind wage?

not sure, just happend in the dail and the news isnt even up on the newstalk website yet its that fresth but there it is.

sounds to me that its the level of the minimum wage thats exempt and that once you earn over it you get charged on the difference. will put up more when i know.

EDIT. yup, listening to oireachtas live and it happened just a few minutes ago and questioning is starting on it. was indeed the taoiseach who announced it. lot of *************************ing going on too

They may as well just rip the budget up and start again...

Personally, I am sick to the bloody teeth... caving in left, right and centre to every single pressure group...

eamonn gilmore asking about how his will be implemented as i type in regards to cut off levels, overtime and the like. will edit this to give answers.

    EDIT

levy on gross income, so if you go over 18000 will be taxed on it to 180 euro. so if you earn over the minimum wage you get hit full amount, no exemption of initial 18k. looks like its a ceiling amount, not a floor.

    Brian Lenihan Budget speech ......

The Government proposes to make changes to the social welfare legislation possibly affecting the young (child benefit), the old (medical cards), the sick (medical cards, hospital charrges), education, health, travel to work and parking you car, but not in that order.
What these changes will be we have scribbled on the back of a (brown) envelope but how they will end up depends on Liveline, Prime Time, Q&A, Newstalk - the meedja and how they influence the backbenchers - upstarts, pinko-liberals, other assorted loolas and those who fail to live by the FF master-creed.
So I'm setting out these definite patriotic proposals (whatever they end up to be) and there will be no u-turns, no going back, no resilsing - and definitely no resigning.

I have principles and if the backbench don't like them I have some more.

ya might want to add US to the mix man. i seem to remember posting a figure of between 30 and 40k as a possible cut off point for the medical cards and viola we get a gov figure of 36k. seems someone was reading

but yeah being serious ive never seen a budget thats so palpably badly put together. its like they just threw ideas out with no thought to see what'd stick.

thats why im not surprised at this 1% levy being changed too. the quote i was hearing was how labour did it once and the reply was always "it didtn apply to people earning less than X ". hitting the minimum wage lads was a really bad looking move, particularly as the gov had basically said theyre earning so LITTLE that its not worth taxing em.
